My Skincare Routine for a Happy Healthy Face!

I hate to admit this or say it out loud but, I used to be the girl who NEVER took her makeup off at night.  I washed my face in the morning slapped on some moisturizer, some makeup and called it a day!  Sometimes I would take a makeup removing wipe to it before bed but that was the extent of it.  I was lucky to have good skin growing up and well into my 20’s so why would I change my habits?  Because I had a baby that’s why.

Gone were the days that my skin looked great when I woke with my makeup still on and hello fine lines, pores, and dark spots.  In the past year and a half, I have aged what feels like 10 years thanks to stress, sleepless nights and yes lack of a proper skin care regimen, oh and probably copious amounts of chocolate.

So recently (yes, this decision did not happen overnight, I fought it tooth and nail) I decided to start taking care of my skin.  I decided this for a few reasons; of course, I want to look my age, or a little younger if I am being honest, but I also wanted to starting taking care of my skin for myself, to show myself some love and gratitude.  Now that I have started a healthy routine I feel more in tune with my body and what is going on with my skin, I watch what I eat (most of the time) and I follow a solid skin care routine with some amazing products.

Below is my routine!

Morning Routine

First things first I get a cup of coffee, lets be real. 😊 Then I grab my Kiehls Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash. I cleanse my face for a few minutes and then I grab my tried and true Kiehls Herbal-Extract Toner.  I have been using Kiehls products for a few months and I LOVE them!  They are clean, refreshing and although the price tag is a little bit high the product goes a long way! After that I will swipe some toner all over my face with a cotton swab for an extra cleansing before I move onto the next step.

After cleansing I bust out this fantastic tool, Nurse Jamie. You are probably thinking what the word? But this facial massaging roller is a gift sent from the heavens and trust me once you try it you will never turn back.  I have been contemplating Botox for a while now and although I think I will do it in the future I am not ready yet to pull the trigger, so I went searching for something less invasive that might help with my fine lines and I found Nurse Jamie!  This massaging roller has 24 massaging stones and helps revitalize skin, improve skin tone and makes my face look fresh and has reduced my fine lines.  Now it is no magic pill but for me it has made a big difference.  You just massage each section of your face in an upward motion for 30-45 seconds every day and in a few weeks, it will make an improvement in your skin.  Bonus:  I have TMJ and using this massager on my jaw has helped relax the muscles and relieve some of my tension headaches.  The price tag is worth it to me! Cheaper then Botox!

Time for under eye cream, because let’s face it being a mom can give you some wicked dark under eye circles.  I just recently found IS Clinical Youth Eye Complex when I went in for a facial and I’m in love!  Its hydrating and I have really seen a difference!

I move onto a great moisturizer and since my skin is on the drier side, I need something with an extra kick!  I love Image Skincare Vital C Hydrating Intense Moisturizer. It is creamy but not oily and works great under makeup.  Now it doesn’t have SPF, but I have SPF in my foundation, so I don’t need it, but you can always mix an SPF into this lotion for coverage.

After that I put on a primer, makeup and start my day!

Night Time Routine

This took me a while to get used to because there are so many steps and honestly you don’t have to do them all, but I have seen great results and I now love this little bit of me time at the end of the day!

I used to use makeup remover wipes, but I feel like they are too harsh for my skin and I have heard other ladies complain of the same issue, so I have started using Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water to remove my make up and impurities.  You can find it at Target!

Then I bust out my Kiehls face wash and toner again.  I just love this stuff!

Next up is a serum to treat imperfections overnight.  I went into Kiehls and had a custom serum made which is a fabulous option because they create something for your specific issues and it feels much more effective to me.   As you can tell from the pic below it has been used quite a bit!

But if you are looking for a serum to buy online, I would suggest this one:  Kate Somerville Retinol Vita C Power Serum.  the retinol and vitamin c help to improve skins texture, uneven skin tone and firmness.  Plus, it smells great!

After my serum I slap on my eye cream and my moisturizer and hit the sheets!

Bonus tips:  Twice a week I using an exfoliating masque – Image Skincare’s Ageless Total Resurfacing Masque, which is the most important step! It helps get rid of dead skin cells and regenerates new vibrant skin!

I also use a face this mask twice a week for extra moisturizing and firming. I am in love with the brand Drunk Elephant and I use this TLC Sukari Baby Facial which comes with a marula oil to put on after!

My Mindfulness Tips for a Happy and Healthy Day!   

How many times a day do you stop, take a few breathes and really savor the moment you are in?  Show of hands. Yep not many of us is my guess.  But that is what I wanted to chat about today in this post. Practicing Mindfulness throughout our busy schedules.

Now I know most of you are thinking “Ok sure let me go ahead and spare the negative amount of free time I have in my schedule to pencil in yet another item on my to do list”  But I am telling you this one is essential and should be thought of as a little treat for yourself, not another mundane chore.

As a busy stay at home mom I am guilty of some days just running on auto pilot.  By the end of the day I am dead on the couch and somehow, I remember hazy moments of taking Avery to the park, doing dishes and making dinner but none of those memories are crisp and clear because I wasn’t mindful.

Being mindful means being present.  Being in tune with your surroundings and all your senses.  Whether it is stopping for a few moments to just look at your little one and take in the details; what is her facial expression? What are you feeling when you see her run or smile or play?  And what is your body feeling? Are you tense?  Relaxed?  Anxious?  Being present is not about trying to change anything it is just about bringing yourself into the current moment and I know each of us could use a little bit of that grounding during the day.

Here are some of my tips!

Getting up before Avery gets up in the morning and enjoying my cup of Joe all by myself (well with my golden retriever on my feet of course)!  This one is so imperative because it allows me to get mentally prepared for the day and to really savor my alone time because I know once that baby opens her eyes it is game on.

WORKOUT!!! Now, I know this one is tough for everyone but honestly it doesn’t have to be anything crazy.  I get in a 30-minute walk with my dog and Avery every day and try to do yoga or Pilates at least three times a week (this is not a constant!)  but just getting up and walking will do the trick.  While you are working out you are automatically being mindful by feeling your heart beat, your breath and your muscles moving.  It’s really the best and for more reasons then being mindful!   I love using my Fitbit charge 3 because the damn thing reminds me throughout the day to get my butt moving!  I got mine on Amazon and it has been a great addition to my wardrobe!

Running an oil diffuser throughout the day.  Now this one may be tricky if you work in an office setting, but you can of course turn it on in the morning while you get ready and in the evening.  I have mine running all day with some amazing oils that really keep me present and calm throughout the day.  Every so often I will walk by it and smell the aroma and be brought back from wherever my mind was wondering!  Below I have linked the diffuser I use and my go to oil brand – DoTerra!

Meditation – Now I am no good at self-meditating, so I use the app Headspace and it is amazing!  They have a large variety of different programs that help with anxiety, stress, self-love and they range from 5 to 20-minute sessions.  I do this every day while Avery takes her nap.  It is amazing, and I promise it will be something you will look forward to!

The last one I use I found from this amazing book Breathe, Mama, Breathe: 5- Minute Mindfulness for Busy Moms by Shonda Moralis MSW, LCSW

In the book she highlights so many ways you can take five minutes out of your day to practice being mindful and they are all doable.  But the one I use the most is the step out of autopilot practice.  She basically explains that throughout the day step back, take a few deep breaths and just take in your surroundings and how you are feeling.  This helps me so much when I am playing with Avery because instead of thinking about how bad I want to eat that piece of chocolate in the freezer or how many dishes I must do, I can soak up memories with my little girl that I will never get back.

I know there are a lot of tips in this post so pick one and give it a try.  We all deserve a little break and a little self-care throughout our busy days!  Mindfulness is one of the best ways to treat ourselves with love and kindness!

Well Hello Lovelies!

As I sit down to write this first post that I have been trying to write since oh I don’t know maybe last January, I am already thinking about all of the other things I need to do today and most importantly what I can get done before my little one wakes up from her ever sporadic nap.  The list goes as accordingly:

  1. Do the dishes
  2. Do the laundry
  3. Eat something
  4. Drink enough coffee to stay awake but not too much to cause sever anxiety/ panic attack
  5. Meditate
  6. Stretch
  7. Pet dog
  8. Do mantras
  9. Watch Real Housewives of Dallas (the only one worth watching nowadays)
  10. Try to figure out a healthy and quick dinner that doesn’t involve a blue box
  11. Write

This list runs through my head every day, all day, and you want to know what gets done every day?  The dishes (many rounds), caffeine consumption (always over the amount I need) the laundry, eating something quick and scrounging dinner together.  Being a woman, a mother, a boss, wife and the list goes on and on; is a never ending, frantic and most of the time selfless job.  We are strong and love what we do but we often neglect the most important part of the equation, ourselves.

Today I decided to just start doing and not over thinking.  Today I write my first post and I will continue to do so because it helps ease my soul, makes me feel accomplished and inspires me to do something more than clean and cook.  It motivates me to take care of myself and to help other women to do the same.  I will write about any and everything that helps me be a better mom, wife, sister, daughter and independent person or just to feel a little bit better throughout the day.   Today’s post is about the first step, just doing it, making the move whatever that is for you.  Whether it’s taking five minutes to eat some chocolate on the couch or to read a few pages of that new book or starting a new career.  I hope ya’ll come back and get a little reprieve and maybe some ideas and motivation to make your day feel a little bit saner and have something all to yourself, even if it’s just for five minutes.
